Diver's Notes

While English is the official language of St. Lucia, many of its inhabitants speak creole. This is evident in many of the place names in St. Lucia, including several of the dive sites. Thus, "Grand Caille" is patois for "Great House". Like much of the now-protected reef along the south-eastern shores of St. Lucia, Grand Caille was once overfished and few large fish remain. On the brighter side, there are an abundance of smaller reef fish that thrive here, along with large gorgonians and barrel sponges. The site begins atop a terrace of large boulders before giving way to a shear wall at about 50'. From this point, we moved along the wall in a slow drift toward the point to the northwest, keeping the wall to our right.

The water was a comfortable 80+ degrees, with areas of cooler waters drifting in from the shore near tributaries. These 'bursts' of cooler water made for interesting thermoclines that blurred the water a bit as we moved through them. We were told this was just the beginning of the rainy season, and thus the thermoclines. Jay mentioned that 2 weeks prior, the lush green forest around us was mostly dry and brown! We had overcast skies today, but as he noted, the hillsides were bright green and teaming with red and orange blooms of flame trees. Along the shear walls and along the ridges, the canopies were dotted with large cacti: shear contrast to the lush tropical beaches and hillsides and a testament to the diverse micro-climates found throughout the volcanic island.
