Diver's Notes

Billy, Gary and I headed to Wilmington to dive with SCUBA Now. Billy has a buddy that used to work with Gypsy and was First Mate on their new boat, the Phoenix (or was it a Phoenix-style boat?). Not my favorite boat, as there was very little shade and very little room to put on your gear or sit comfortably. But I digress; we are here for the diving!

First stop was the Hyde. A ship purposely sunk in 1988 as part of the artificial reef program, the Hyde sits upright in 80' of water southeast of the Wrightsville Beach.

The water was green with 25-30' vis. Large schools of baitfish were present most everywhere. Early in the dive I encountered a very large stingray off the port side near the bow surrounded by a school of large cobia, ramoras and almaco jacks. I also ran across a small school of Atlantic spadefish near the sand. Several sea cucumbers--one I identified as a five-toothed sp.--were scattered about the wreck on the sea floor. One (possibly two) sand tiger shark kept us company on and off throughout the dive. Most notable about this dive were the many swim-throughs the wreck has to offer.
