Diver's Notes

Memorial Day started out with a chilly overcast morning. Patrick texted Jen yesterday to see if we wanted to go to FLSP for dives today. Unfortunately, Jen is sitting out with an ear ache that developed from our dive at Mystery Lake last weekend, so she declined, but I met him and Tom bright-and-early at 8 a.m.

The water was a chilly 67F, though still several degrees warmer than Mystery Lake, and a lot clearer: about 15-20' vis. We were on our own at the lake for most of the dive--a small group was preparing to enter as we exited the dive.

We entered from the 'beach' near the shelter and traveled along the wall between 20 and 25 feet down, out past the point and back. I turned the group around when I hit 1850 PSI. The trip back was quicker, so we hung out between the entry and the dock. I noticed bluegill beds with very large males guarding them just below the remains of the old dock. This is the first time I recall seeing them bed there, as typically they are over nearer the shallow airplane. We were getting chilly, so we decided to end the dive at 42 min.

Besides the large bluegills, we saw several bass of various sizes. As usual, the ones on the wall further out seemed a bit more aggressive or curious: one nipped at my glove a few times before scurrying off. We came across 3 or 4 fry 'balls' along the wall and at the entrance, also of varying size and age.

My 3mm TherMAXX with hooded vest didn't seem to keep me as warm today as it did last week, even with significantly warmer water. It could be due to the length of time we were in the water, or maybe I just started out and remained colder topside because of the cooler air temp and overcast.

A good dive nonetheless, with decent vis.
