Diver's Notes

Our second dive with SCUBA Now found us at Markham. The Markham is a 320' dredge that was deliberately sunk as part of the artificial reef project. It is a very short distance from the Hyde. This ship, however, is inverted and lists on its port side. This makes for a dramatically different viewpoint than the Hyde.

The water was a bit less green, with possibly more vis, but not significantly so. Shortly into our dive, I was greeted with my old friend from the Hyde: a very large stingray with a school of cobia, jacks and ramoras slowly glided by, this time a bit closer and clearer than the last. I'm almost certain this was the same group as the markings on the ray look identical--at least the best I could tell at the time, and later reviewing the videos.

Being inverted, the stern section of the boat is a very popular with photographers, as the starboard prop and rudder are very prominent and contrast nicely with the surrounding water. The entire hull seems to be blanketed in reddish-green leafy seaweed, with black fingers of coral scattered throughout. A variety of tropical and native fishes make good use of this environment.

While we were all boarding the boat, one of the crew dove in to do some spearfishing. He returned with a large (4') cobia. I asked him if he went for a ride... He said that as soon as he fired the speargun, he sort of regretted it. But the spear hit its mark perfectly and the fish never had a chance to put up a fight!
