Diver's Notes

Jen and I lead a Gypsy Divers trip to Key Largo with Jenny and Bryan and their two friends, Jason and Dulcie. The latter were certified in the 90's, but having only a few dives under their belt and recently starting over they're essentially new divers. With this in mind, we decided to stay shallow today and see about going to the Spiegel Grove tomorrow or Saturday.

The waters were a little choppy heading out, but were calm once on the site with a little current and good vis of 50 to 60 feet. The sun was out, but there were cumulus clouds, some threateninng to build into squals. We were on the Quiescence II with Captain Steve Burner at the healm. After a short dive brief, we made a backroll entry and gatherned near the bottom. Jen would be guiding this dive around the Hannah M. Bell and surrounding reef.

The Elbow reef is in good shape--much better than French or Molasses--with large sea fans dominating the tops of the coral heads in this area. While the reef was beautiful and abundant with life, the highlight of the dive was simply being back in the water. Shortly before the trip I realized my last recorded dive was September 19th, 2021, and the last dive trip was to the Keys almost a full year ago: September 4th, 2021. That's the longest dry spell--pun intended--I've had since we started diving in 2014.
