Diver's Notes

After several failed attempts at getting Jen to dive naked, she finally took a giant-stride off the "Jade Mountain" into the sea for her 100th dive!

Upon entry, the seabed continued the dramatic slope of the seaside cliffs to a bottom that was nowhere in site. Something that stood out to me on this dive were large formations or patches of what I believed to be finger coral. Greenish in colour, small, thick columns with yellowish-white centers protruded upward a few inches from their base, which was obscured. Seemingly fragile, I noticed several broken columns laying on patches of sand between the colonies. I had seen these formations on earlier dives, but not quite this plentiful.

Ten minutes into our dive, we came across a resting hawksbill turtle. Shortly after, we encountered the first of 4 pinnacles that rise like large columns out of the seabed. These volcanic domes are covered in coral and

sponges, and are the namesake of this dive site. Among one of them was a juvenile scrawled cowfish: bright yellow/orange in colour with elongated spots of bluish black; tiny but unmistakable among the reef. (Unfortunately, I still haven't mastered the macro lens, nor figured out when to use it and when not to, so I did not get a clear image of the fish.)

Two large rocky columns (or pinnacles) formed a narrow channel lined with gorgonians and sponges. Jen found a pair of banded coral shrimp in a sponge that entertained her for a while. She could nearly touch them without any affect, but as soon as I turned the camera on, they would quickly retreat back down into their hidey-holes.
