Diver's Notes

Yesterday we spent the afternoon "swimming with the pigs" (actually, wading with them as someone in another group decided to just feed them from shore...) at Big Majors, and snorkel Thunderball Grotto. The former is named after the movie which was filmed here. I did not go (not a big swimmer/snorkeler), but Jen and Elle did. They commented that the grotto was filled with reef fish. And people.

We ported in Staniel Cay harbor for the night, our first near shore in several days. The little town caters to the boat tourists, with one bar and a few welcomed amenities--like toilets that flush without manually pumping! The biggest positive from Elle's point-of-view is that there was very little movement at night. She's done well on this trip so far, as she gets seasick rather easily and is way out of her comfort zone.

After spending a night in port at Staniel Cay, we headed out early to watch the sunrise at sea and dive Jeep Reef. I didn't take my camera on this one, as it was our first drift dive (and only my fourth), and I wanted to pay more attention to my dive. Also, I figured there wouldn't be much opportunity to take many photos or good video. At any rate, the reef is rather shallow, with a moderate current that pushed us along for a little less than half-an-hour. Never did see the Jeep that gives this reef its name (actually, more like a Jeep chassis), but did see some nice coral formations and the typical marine life that we've experienced at these depths.
