Diver's Notes

I am hooked on night dives on the Anse Chastanet Reef!

We made our way into the water around 17:30--just before sunset--submerged over the shallow sandy bottom, and made our way steadily downslope, stopping around 30' before turning and making our way across the top of the reef. We stayed mostly at this depth for the majority of the dive, with a brief, 10-minute dip to 60' halfway through.

One of the most notable sites when first entering the shallow reef are all of the long-spined urchins that litter the floor. I happily kept my distance from the seabed and reef to avoid any stabs or stings! Once darkness fell, we again saw a large channel clinging crab and several other creatures that we observed during our first night dive. Eric pointed out a small school of Caribbean reef squids on our way out near shore.

The highlight of the dive was near the end, just before crossing the last bed of coral on the reef. A long, segmented worm stretched out across the floor from underneath the coral: about 2 feet long and 1-to-2 inches in diameter. We had found The Thing! And that's exactly how it is referenced in their identification book, but it is also known as one of the many species of bobbit worms. I have seen them on nature shows: fierce footage of them snatching their prey with lightning speed presumed to be eaten alive, always accompanied by dramatic music. The Thing had all of the features of a antagonist in a horror flick: total nightmare fuel!
