Diver's Notes

A few of us decided to give Anse Chastanet Reef another go this afternoon. Jen had a spa treatment, so I buddied up with Garland. Jen and I--not to mention others--had been observing her all week. She's not an ideal dive buddy, and I'm being generous. But this was a small group going out, so I made it clear to her that we would 'stick together' as a group. Earlier she had asked me for advice about keeping her ears clear, and I found my opportunity to try and curb her desire to continuously yo-yo along the walls. At any rate, I was unsure that I was up to the task, but this is an easy dive and we have done it enough times that I felt confident in my navigation. In the end, it turned out fine and I never had to chase her up or down the wall. At any rate, we were deep near the sand for a large portion of the dive anyway. Kiniass was our guide for this dive.

Dave spotted an eel burrowed in the sand under a coral, which I believe was a type of snake eel. The only distinctive markings I could see were small yellow spots on the head that appeared to extend down the body. The snout had two large protrusions on either side of its mouth, but the head shape and mouth did not appear to be that of a moray. Looking in my reef fish identification guide, it appears to have been a sharptail eel. Keniass found a clinger crab hidden under a ledge, and a red-banded lobster. We made our way to the grassy shallows near the end of the dive, where we were met with a large school of surgeonfish foraging. Keniass showed us the proper way to defend ourselves against the mighty damselfish, and I spotted two pairs of eyes peering out from under a slab, which belonged to two goldspotted eels. (Later while viewing the video footage, I noticed there were actually three eels!)

I think I'm getting better with the macro lens on my GoPro, but I definitely need a light source if I ever want to improve on the image quality. I'm hoping some colour correction will help.

After the dive, I spent the afternoon at the beach bar with my favourite bartender Melvin. He introduced me to Admiral Rodney, a local libation. I would end up bringing two bottles back with me from the duty free store at the Hewanorra International Airport!
