Diver's Notes

Second dive for Elle's refresher, we just stuck to swimming above the thermocline, along the east wall. The park has gotten very busy since our first dive, thus the choice to swim away from most of the activities (we only ran up on two divers, about 10' deeper than we were, donning wetsuits, hoods, gloves and a very nice camera setup. I didn't bring my GoPro on this trip, but Joseph did and brought it along for this dive.

We got as far as the large flat wall on the very east part of the quarry before turning around and coming back the same route, with a jaunt over to the brim beds. Swimming out, I noticed the the plane had been moved, and the wing had broken off and was laying on the ground. Not sure when that happened, but I heard it was earlier this spring when ECU moved it for some reason.

As with the first dive, there was plenty of fish, especially bass. The most memorable was probably a large mouth bass ~2' in length hanging around the wall at about the halfway point, where there was a pile of rubble resting on a ledge. I approached him and he didn't move much at all. That's when I noticed he (she, likely) was surrounded by small fry bass! I didn't realize they offer protection after "birth", but apparently they do. She only moved a little when I was within a couple of feet of her.

There were no brim in the beds this time: it appears they've all hatched (and, again, there were a lot of fry around). Another bass was hanging around one of the basketball goals with her fry (or maybe her food?). I managed to sneak up on two brim and touched their tails before they bolted! Another close encounter is when we swam under the dock and a brim, trying to keep its distance from Joseph and Elle, and a lot of students near the dock, must not have realized I was sneaking up on him until I almost ran into him with my mask!

We finished the dive by stopping at the slope up to the small beach area where we entered (the old dock).
