Diver's Notes

We had been lucky all week with being the only dive boat on site and tonight would be no different. We headed out early for the transition period with company: Burner's SO, Lex. She used to work at Quiescence, and is now a researcher with one of the marine science programs in the Keys. Lex has a great personality and is fun to hang with, so we were more than happy to have her come along.

Our dive started just after sunset, and the wreck was still awash with a faint light for the first 15 minutes. Almost immediately we saw a sea turtle, and then another, and several more as the night set in. Some of the group swore they saw a dozen, but I would put the count closer to 5 or 6, both green turtles and loggerheads, which is still amazing! Large redtail parrotfish hovered close to the wreck's surface and a couple of hermit crabs dualed near the stern. Jen and I were able to stay a bit further away from the group while they enjoyed spotting turtles and other marine life. They excitedly pointing out the creatures, circling their lights around each, one after the other. After about 45 minutes, I signaled to Jen that I was going to head back to the boat, which was easy to find as Burner had dropped a 15 foot weighted line in with a flashlight attached to its end. As I arrived, Lex was also at the line for her safety stop. We boarded together and watched the underwater lightshow from the boat for 10 minutes or so before the others surfaced.

Everyone was thrilled to see so many turtles on the wreck. It reminded me of when Jen and I saw our first sea turtle on this very dive site back in 2014.
