Diver's Notes

St. Lucia's most famous landmark is the pair of iconic pitons: Gross Piton is the southernmost and tops out at 2,619' above sea level, while Petit Piton is more dramatic in its profile, albeit shorter at 2,438'. Together they form a 7,190 acre World Heritage Site, and are prominent features on the national flag.

At the base of Petit Piton lies the Piton Wall. As its name implies, the site is along a shear wall that drops several hundred feet and is covered with gorgonians, soft corals, sea whips, sponges, feather duster worms, and a plethora of macro life.

Highlights of our dive included two frogfish (one reddish-purple, the other green, both camouflaged against their resident sponges), a pod of rock lobsters underneath shelf coral, azure vase sponges with banded shrimp, and large schools of creole wrasse, chromis and other reef fishes.

After our dive, we boated back to Anse Chastanet where we picked up the non-divers of our group before making our way back south and into the small town of Soufriere. With a population of just under 8,000, Soufriere is one of the largest 'cities' in St. Lucia. Albeit much smaller than the present-day capital city, Castries to the north, Soufriere was once the capital city of St. Lucia when it was under French rule. It is of historical importance and abounds in French architecture, as well as the hub of St. Lucia's most well-known attractions, including the Pitons. We spent a couple of hours walking a few blocks near the town's harbour, weaving in and out of gift and coffee shops. I bought a couple of bracelets (since misplaced) handmade from ginger lily seeds and was treated to refreshing coconut water from a street vendor before hopping back on the boat and heading back to Anse Chastanet for our afternoon dive.
