Diver's Notes

Five Fingers, Elbow Reef
One of the—if not the—most beautiful reef system in Key Largo. Very large elkhorn coral along the 100’ long reefs. We were told to look for macro life as it is in abundance here. While it probably is true, I never really saw what I was told to look for—lettuce leaf worms, arrow crabs and cleaner shrimp—most likely due to my untrained eye! I did find two fish that I don’t recall seeing before: The first was an orangespotted triggerfish about 6” long that had ‘textbook’ markings; the second was about 8” long, mostly silver with red mottling along the edges turning to large, vertical ovals along the lateral line. Notably was his very large eye for his size; seemed to take up half of his head! Not a very pretty fish, it turned out to be a glasseye snapper. I dove with the Hydros and used 4 lbs this time. Probably could have gone with 2 or even none at all. Still liking the BCD. I decided to forego the camera on this dive.
