Diver's Notes

Jalousie's entry point lies somewhere just south of Sugar Beach Resort and between Petit and Gros Pitons, though nearer the latter. The word means "jealousy" in French and is named after a nearby 18th-century sugar plantation and beach.

On our very first dive, and for several after, I had spotted long, slender snake-like eels among sandy shallows and turtle grass, especially near the Anse Chastanet beach. Our dive entry at Jalousie was at such a place, and I had my first encounter with one of these 'goldspotted' eels close enough and long enough to get a pretty good shot of it. Shortly thereafter, as we crossed over the reef I came across a very large queen conch in a small sandy patch, and nearby a small graysby peeping over the top of an azure vase sponge.

It should be noted that on most dive trips I have been on, it is a big deal to come across such macro life as we have commonly seen her in St. Lucia. While there aren't many large fish or pelagic animals to encounter, the focus is on the reef, and those reefs are teaming with macro life. To the point that I started passing up shrimp, arrow crabs and the like because I felt I had already videoed so many. Even siting fireworms, which I have only seen a few of until this trip, became relatively mundane. Nonetheless, this dive presented several opportunities to observe the tiny life among the corals, some of which I was only too eager to capture on film.
