Diver's Notes

Jen and I met Patrick at Fantasy Lake around 9am. The skies were cloudy but clearing, and the temps were in the high 70s and rising. We decided to execute the same dive plan as last week, and I took along my GoPro with magenta filter to try it out in the 'green' water.

Our dive started off well enough, except I noticed Jen was messing with her aux hose that had completely disconnected. Since we were so close to the surface, I signaled her to pop up where I reconnected it, cleared it, had her test it, and submerge again. Patrick was waiting for us to meet him at the platform just before the airplane and bream beds. A quick survey of both, we headed off to the Bhudda statue via the twin stakes between the airplane and beach. We picked up the line a few fin kicks later and followed it around. Back at the culverts near the airplane, we spotted Arturo with one of his students doing their check dive.

The conditions at the rock crusher were familiar: colder and murkier than the surrounding water. We spent little time here before following the line up to the bus, where we met two other divers. After a quick swim-through, we followed the road bed to the next platform and then took a right back toward the entrance. The water at 10-feet feels much warmer than it did even last week, and the dive over all seemed a bit warmer (in fact, our average temperature was 69 where it was 66 last, with a very small difference in average depth). I popped up near the big rock where I sat waiting for the others. Jen was playing around at the surface--she told me later she was checking her buoyancy in the shallows--and Patrick was still finning a bit deeper. He was going for a full hour of dive time, and if I had known we were so close, I would have stayed down with them and ticked off the extra minutes.

As we emerged, the sun was out and the air temperature was much warmer. It turned out to be a beautiful day for a cool, refreshing dive.

Something I failed to mention in my last log: After my dive at Fantasy Lake two weeks ago (#147), last week I decided to trim the weight from 10 pounds to 6. I usually dive with about 6, but with the wetsuit and hooded vest, 10 seemed more appropriate, even with the heavier (-4 lb) tank. The 6lbs proved to be just about right: I descended well enough, and only had to put a bit of air in my BCD. It wasn't until I finished my dive did I realize that I forgot to put any weight in my pockets at all! I had dived the entire time with zero weight! With the same 'heavier' tank today, I decided to not add any weight and did just fine, except I'm still a bit heavy. Next time I'll try a regular 80cf tank and see if I have any issues maintaining buoyancy. No doubt this has to do with my weight loss of 40+ pounds since my last dive! My SAC rate is still pretty high, but we also did a lot of swimming.
