Diver's Notes

We were met again with a little chop and bright skies with scattered cumulus clouds on our second day. The conditions were definitely better than the forecast of rain and high winds with 4-foot seas, and though we did hit some waves that high during the crossing to the northern reefs, the conditions on The Elbow were not bad. The water at the original planned site was a little green (I cannot remember the location), so Burner moved on to clearer blue waters.

The City of Washington is a "wreck of a wreck" as Burner put it, with most of the structure gone and the remaining parts scattered across a debris field. It lies in a graveyard of ships, literally on top of an older wooden ship whose remnants are found among the wreckage. And like the nearby Five Fingers and Hannah Bell sites, the site is surrounded by a healthy reef.

I tackled the dive a little more conservative today than yesterday, mainly staying on or around the wreck, fighting the current as little as possible. Jen and the rest of the group did more exploring than I, but i did see a very large school of midnight parrotfish, and an unusual color variant of a hogfish. Jen spotted a moon jelly upside down on the sea floor. It was very much alive, swimming against the sand, but not getting far. We had seen several near the surface yesterday, and this was a gentle reminder to keep a lookout when surfacing. One other siting of note was a sand tilefish (Malacanthus plumieri). It was skiddish and kept its distance but I managed to film it well enough to confirm its identification. This was the first time I've recorded this species on a dive.

Whatever was plaguing me yesterday seemed to have subsided a bit, and I was able to stay down for the full hour, albeit I was still low on air at the surface. Jason had been a bit heavy (and out of trim) yesterday, so I asked if he would drop from 12 lbs to 8 lbs. He did so and his trim improved. Though I have no aspirations of becoming an instructor, I do enjoy sharing knowledge with newer divers just as I still like learning from those with far more experience than I.
