Diver's Notes

Today, three of our divers embarked on a climb up Gros Piton, while most of the rest of us ventured underwater at its base.

Located at the base of Gros Piton, the Coral Garden dive site offers a steep slope from the surface to several hundred feet below. All along the wall are a variety of sponges and corals. We stayed mainly at around 50 to 60': below, the coral was more sparse giving way to a sandy slope. A few minutes into my dive I came across the largest school of chromis that I remember ever seeing. As with several other sites along the walls in this area, we swam through several thermoclines noting the slight sudden chill and 'blurry' water. These areas with varied seabeds and water temps team with life. Near the end of our dive, I came across a very large barrel sponge, maybe 6' or taller. Our safety stop was over a large bed of sea grass where we watched a pair of courting porcupinefish.

Overall, a very relaxing drift dive: slow and easy.

We spent our surface interval on the shores of Soufriere where crewman Neil's father owns a shop in a new development catering to tourists. A u-shaped boardwalk lined with several colourful shops offering spa services, snacks and souvenirs huddled around a bar and small park in the center. After an hour or so, we made our way back to the boat for a (very) short ride to our next dive site.
