Diver's Notes

Winch Hole, Molasses Reef

From the Benwood, we made it over to the French Reef where the water was green. Captains recommended we move over to the Molasses, where there would be more of a crowd but better water. He was right on both accounts, and when we moored to buoy 15 we joined several other boats, including the Pennekamp glass-bottom tour. Jen was just starting to warm up from the last dive (and the cold, windy surface interval), so decided to sit this one out. Under water, however, we only ran into a few groups and always in the opposite direction. Toward the end of the dive, we were by ourselves for the most part. Following the #15 line down, we headed south (away from the tower) into slightly deeper water along a narrow sand channel. Beautiful coral formation with lots of reef fish within and hovering above. Soon we were in the winch hole. We continued on through another sand channel toward the ‘ledge’. Along the way, I found a large green moray eel hanging out under a ledge along the sandy bottom, which the group checked out on the return trip. Hung out at the ledge for a while before turning and going back the same way we came out. At the winch hole, we ran across a small school of Atlantic Spadefish, the first I ever recall seeing in Key Largo. Back at the boat, Joseph and I hung out exploring the shallow reef. On top, at around 10’, there was a nice surge that was fun to hang out and play in for a few minutes. At 60 minutes in, we surfaced and headed back to the doc. Jen had called in pizza for us and the shop for some much needed grub. Next, it’s off to the fish market and a great meal to celebrate another dive trip with Quiescence and Captain Steve.
