Diver's Notes

Hans Ledge (French Ledge), French Reef

Waters were calming a bit by the time we got back on the boat and headed over to French reef. Still some 3-4’ waves hitting now and then. Clouds were starting to build over the mainland. There were a couple of boats tied up on the Benwood moorings, and a couple more on the French Reef, but not much activity otherwise. This was a slow drift dive, from mooring 11 to 9. Probably less than a quarter knot pushed us along, so it was no problem stopping to take a closer look at some of the smaller marine life along the way. Vince pointed out some cleaner shrimp in a small hole under a coral head. There were a few barracuda and a small reef shark. Also, noticed a very large (1 ½’) yellow snapper and some Spanish grunts. A few small groupers as well. Toward the end of the dive around mooring 9 is a natural spring where the water gets a bit chilly and the vis drops. We were briefed on this being near #9, and it was indeed very noticeable. Back up and on the boat, headed back to shore for a smoother ride. We only passed one boat on the way in, and none were in the bay when we returned. None of the other Q boats went out today.
