Diver's Notes

Billy and I booked a trip with Discovery Dive Center on Captain Terry's boat, the "Outrageous V". This would mark my first dive off the coast of NC, and I couldn't ask for a better one. We headed out to the U 352--a dive I've wanted to check off my list for quite awhile--and were met with clear waters and very little current. In fact, Capt. Terry said this was one of two days he'd ever seen the conditions as favorable as they were.

I was diving with Nitrox, but forgot to change my computer settings. Needless to say, I went into deco for a 5 minute stop around the 10' mark. I had already stopped for a 5 minute safety stop at 15'--and I knew I had made the mistake on my settings--so I ignored the deco stop and resurfaced. Big mistake! I didn't realize my computer would lock out with no way of resetting. Thus, I had to dive the next dive analog.

Also notable was the dive entry, which I had already been briefed on by Billy. A lot of NC dive boat captains want you to make a negative-entry dive, that is dive in negatively buoyant. They toss in a weighted line that runs the length of the ship, at about 15' below the surface. This is the gathering point--if you need one--and also acts as the safety stop guideline on your return. Off the back of the boat, a regulator dangles in the water on a long hose that runs to a tank that is stored on the boat. It was an interesting setup.

Among the marine life we encountered many grunts and other small tropical fish, a few Atlantic spadefish, greater amberjack and a spotted moray eel. On the wreck were urchins and lizardfish.
